Building Bookwood's Technical Foundations Around a Creative Team

Building Bookwood's Technical Foundations Around a Creative Team

Helping a multidisciplinary studio of writers, artists, musicians and developers turn creative requirements into maintainable Unity systems.

Bookwood is being created by a multidisciplinary team of writers, artists, musicians and developers. For a project driven heavily by story and content, the technology needs to support the people creating that content rather than becoming an obstacle to production. GamerCat Studio brought Ocean View Games into the project to help shape Bookwood's technical foundations and provide additional engineering experience alongside its existing developer. The challenge: Bookwood is not simply a collection of static stories. Its books contain interactive choices, artwork, relationships and branching content, all of which need to be represented reliably inside the game. At the same time, many of the people creating Bookwood are specialists in writing and visual content rather than software development. That creates an important engineering requirement: systems cannot only work technically, they also need to support the way the wider team actually produces the game. Poor technical decisions early in development could easily create increasingly complicated workflows for writers and artists as Bookwood's library grows. Turning creative needs into technical systems: our role included working through how Bookwood's creative requirements should be represented within Unity and helping establish the core systems that support the project. Rather than approaching each requirement as an isolated feature, we looked at how the systems would be used repeatedly throughout production. That included considering how content would be structured, how interactive stories would be represented, and how those systems would fit into the wider application architecture. The goal was to make future development easier rather than simply complete the next immediate task. Working alongside the existing developer: Ocean View Games joined Bookwood as additional technical expertise rather than replacing GamerCat Studio's internal development capability. We worked alongside their developer, researching approaches, implementing foundational systems and helping make architectural decisions that would affect the project over the longer term. This allowed GamerCat Studio to retain ownership of the project while benefiting from additional experience during an important stage of development. It is an approach that works particularly well for teams that already have development capability but need help solving difficult technical problems or establishing stronger foundations, and it is the model behind our co-development service. Designing for the people using the tools: one of the most important considerations was that Bookwood's systems ultimately exist to support a content-heavy production process. Writers and artists need to be able to produce large amounts of material without every addition creating a new engineering problem. That meant favouring predictable structures and reusable systems over solutions that might be technically clever but difficult for the wider team to work with. Where technical constraints existed, we helped translate them into practical workflows the team could build around.
Our Contributions
🧱

Core Unity Architecture

Established the foundational systems behind Bookwood and the interactive story representation built on top of them, designed around repeated use throughout production rather than one-off features.

✍️

Workflows for Writers and Artists

Favoured predictable structures and reusable systems so a content-heavy team can add large amounts of material without every addition creating a new engineering problem.

🤝

Embedded Alongside the Client's Developer

Joined as additional technical expertise rather than a replacement, researching approaches and making architectural decisions while GamerCat Studio retained full ownership of the project.

The Results

Stronger Technical Foundation

GamerCat Studio has a clearer base from which to build additional stories, systems and content as development continues.

Decisions Made Before They Get Expensive

Architectural choices were settled early, while they were still cheap to change, rather than after production had built on top of them.

Ownership Retained by the Client

The internal team kept control of the project throughout, gaining engineering experience during an important stage of development rather than handing the work over.
